Beidaihe is located in the southeast of Qinhuangdao city, Hebei province,
with the Penglai Mountain to the north and the Bohai Sea to the south.
Beidaihe features green hills, blue seawater , a winding coastline
, and soft sandy beaches. With a mild temperature all year round,
it has long been a famous seaside summer resort. Along the ten- kilometre
long coastline from the mouth of the Daihe River to the Yingjiao Pavilion
is a beautiful scenic area. Buildings of various styles and cultural
relics hidden in the pretty hills grown with green trees, and stones
washed by the waves into many strange shapes are unique attractions
of Beidaihe . Emperors since ancient times and men of letter have
left many literary works in praise of trhe beauty of Beidaihe.
Located 15km (9 miles) southwest of Qinhuangdao City and 300km
(186 miles) east of Beijing, Beidaihe is a seaside resort area on
the Bohai Gulf. During the 19th century, the craggy coastline and
beaches attracted Europeans living in nearby Tianjin, who built
villas and bungalows here, transforming a fishing village into a
pleasant seaside getaway.
After the founding of the PRC, Beidaihe soon became a resort for
senior Party officials and was particularly popular with Communist
leaders in the 1970s. During this era different sections of the
coast were cordoned off for foreigners and senior officials.
Today, the divisions have gone but the quaint European bungalows
and grand villas remain and Beidaihe is extremely popular with Beijing
residents. |
