| Shanghai Longtang |
 |
As a special form of residence in Shanhgai, Longtang appeared in the
1870s. It is classfied under several types: Early-stage Shikumen (also
called old-style Shikumen LOngtang), New styled Longtang and apartment-
styled Longtang. Though they are more or less tinged with traces of
Chinese traditional architectures, as well as as were influenced by
various foreign architecture, Longtang differ either from the residence
in the regions south of the Yantze River or from any western architecture.
It was the most typical of the urban culture of modern Shanghai and
is a precious legacy endowed to Shanghai by the history. |
