Dough figurines are popular in the Yellow River Valley. They are
indispensable at weddings and funerals. Dough figurines given by
uncle from the 6th to the 9th day of the first lunar month. When
the baby is one month old, relatives will send a dough figurine.
This is the time-honored Chinese folk handicraft. With the dexterity
and ingenuity, figurine makers create colorful and vivid figurines
out of everyday objects or famous figures in Chinese culture.
The origin of molded dough figurines can be traced back to the
times of the Three Kingdoms Period in Chinese history. Figures
of flour are made to appease the ghosts that were said to be blocking
an army from crossing a river.
